that would all pivot on the notion that the two characters are indeed on a pirate ship...
in which case, the GALLERY would be on fire and not the kitchen...
if however the pirate is retired, then yes...the kitchen would probably be on fire due to the first mate's inability to light a pipe using matches and thus having to resort to using the entire stove and nearby plastic spatula as combustive material..

Actually, there is no reason why a non-retired pirate may not set a land-bound kitchen on fire.
Also, GALLEY, not GALLERY
and you've COMPLETELY missed the REAL pivotal point of the exchange, which is that the first mate feels pretty. High self-esteem is a must for a successful pirate.

and it would appear that the first mate isn't all that confident...
why would he need the captain to acknowledge his 'pretty' nature if he were so sure of himself?
Well, he could be confident and simply be remarking on it, such as how many people remark "I'm bored" or "I'm hungry". They're not trying to convince themselves, or anyone.
The other possibility is that at that moment he feels -exceptionally pretty- rather than his standard level of prettyness.

Wait, now I remember. He could be reassuring his captain on the high morale of himself and his crew during a time of stress (the kitchen being on fire)
